Ballon Hill Archaeological Project
Through the information currently available, it appears as though Ballon Hill, Co. Carlow, may have been a burial ground of national importance in Bronze Age Ireland (approx. 2500 - 4500 years ago). The Ballon Hill Archaeological Project (BHAP) was set up to investigate the extent of the archaeology located here and to highlight the importance of
the hill to our archaeological record.
The BHAP , conducted in conjunction with Carlow Historical and Archaeological Society and Carlow County Museum, is a community-based not-for-profit heritage project. It seeks not only to understand but communicate the importance of the archaeology located at Ballon Hill.
The Society
The Society, formerly known as the Old Carlow Society, was founded in 1946 with Rev. W. Millar as Chairman, Liam D. Bergin as Hon. Secretary, J.F. Dillon as Hon Treasurer, and Rev. P.J. Brophy as Editor of the Society’s Journal “Carloviana.”
The aims of the Society are set out in its Rules as follows:

b) To encourage research into the history, folklore, archaeology, and genealogy of County Carlow.
c) To promote and encourage the restoration of buildings and other monuments of historical and archaeological interest in County Carlow and to develop interest in the said buildings and monuments and to encourage the maintenance of them in their historic or original character.
d) To publish books, pamphlets, and papers relating to the Society’s objects and to encourage interest in the literature, fine arts and sciences of the county and to publish records appertaining thereto.

|

Its publications include the annual journal “Carloviana” which has appeared each year since 1947. It also organises outings to places of historical and/or archaeological interest.
