Join Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society for the third in the winter lecture series. Niall O Brien will present ‘The Barrow Navigation: a social and economic history’.
This talk will discuss the physical layout of the navigation with its canal, weirs, locks, land holdings and buildings. Also discussed will be the trade on the river; the volume and type of trade and steamers and boats. Niall will also look at the community who worked the waterway, the lock-keepers and the personalities in the Board room and the family who made and broke the waterway.
Niall is a graduate of University College Cork and has written a book on the navigation of the Munster Blackwater and hosts a Facebook page on the sailing vessels that worked the coastal trade around the coasts of Ireland and Britain and across the Irish Sea. He has written many articles on medieval and modern history in various journals.
Following the talk, Niall will discuss a public campaign to source any documents or artefacts relating to the navigation that people have in Carlow, Kilkenny and Kildare.
The talk will take place on Wednesday 15th January at 8 pm, Mc Grath Hall in Bagenalstown. Admission is free and all are welcome.
